United States Driver's License Application Overview:
A U.S.
driver's license can be used for many practical purposes in the United States
including operating a car, opening bank accounts, as proof legal age for buying
alcohol and tobacco, cashing checks and as proof if identification for boarding
domestic flights. Each of the 50 States issue their own driver licenses, but
they can be used to drive a car anywhere in the United States and Canada. The
Real ID Act is accepted by several states, and it requires applicants to show
proof of legal immigration status to apply for a drivers license. As of May 2008
driver licenses issued by the states that do not meet The Real ID Act
requirements will not be accepted as legal identification to gain entry into a
federal building or to board an airplane for domestic flights. All 50 states are
gradually updating their requirements and starting to request proof of
immigration status. However, several states do still not require proof of
immigration status.
